It felt contrived when on 15/4/20 John Nicolson MP tweeted to “watch and learn” an “immensely moving documentary”. The link was to a 5 year old BBC documentary that was no longer available to view. It’s unknown if after 5 years his “young trans constituent” still lived in the constituency. One thing for certain is, in 2015 when it was filmed, John Nicolson was not the Member of Parliament. It feels wrong for him to have used this young person to promote his own political agenda.

It began with a tweet

His Twitter posts revealed an assumption that his view was the well informed and most valid position which was patronising to the hundreds of women replying to him.

It quickly became clear that he had no intention of facilitating a reasoned debate but was instead looking to host a sensationalised discussion on his TalkRadio show.

There were loads of suggestions that he should instead talk to women

His lack of engagement with women was obvious,, yet lots were still offering to talk to him.

He didn’t engage though …

He referred to them as “angry ranters”, insulting all who had tried to genuinely engage with his initial tweet.

Helen asked her question. Michael came to his rescue, which he liked.

Helen attempted again …

Jonathan Ross makes his entrance to answer Helen’s question

John doesn’t answer, and begins blocking instead

A few more days pass and, despite there having been no Twitter interaction with him and LGB Alliance, John bizarrely tweets the allegation that he has been on the “receiving end of a Twitter pile on by the sinister transphobic @AllianceLGB”. His tweet links to a BBC interview with Graham Linehan and a couple of hours later John calls him a transphobe.

He then quotes tweets himself, addressing the embarrassing fact pointed out to him by many that the documentary wasn’t actually available on the BBC link he had given. He was now saying it was on a different channel, yet he didn’t link to that one either. “Watch and learn” indeed.

Spent the next few hours tweeting abuse about LGB Alliance, calling Graham Linehan a transphobe and trying desperately to get Jonathan Ross to interact with him

Tweeting well into the night about “transphobic pile ons from the sinister @AllianceLGB”, and not talking to women.

The next morning, LGB Alliance comment for the first time about the remarks made by John

Brief background – LGB Alliance launched in October 2019 and was immediately attacked, including from representatives of the established LGBT organisations. It was relentless.
